Text Box: Begin phase 1 of program.  Candidate is automatically highly qualified due to coursework reflected on college transcript.  What constitutes highly qualified?  24 hours in Math, or 24 hours in Social Studies, or 24 hours in Science, etc.  12 of the 24 must be upper level classes.

Text Box: Candidate cannot be hired immediately as a classroom teacher.  If a school district really wants this person to teach in their district, they can place this candidate in a long-term substitute position pending the results of the content TExES exam, which will typically be taken 6-8 weeks after joining the program.  Passing this exam will make a candidate highly qualified.  The district can then make the candidate a teacher instead of a substitute and pay them a normal teacher salary.  Normally, the district will go back to the date the candidate took the test and pay them as a teacher effective the test date instead of the date they found out they passed their test.   (NOT COMMON IN LARGE DISTRICTS.)

Text Box: If candidate passes Content TExES exam, they are ready to be hired as a teacher and begin phase 2 of the program, which is ongoing training.  They will be assigned mentors.
Text Box: Candidate fails Content TExES exam.  The candidate may or may not be kept on in the district as a substitute teacher. 
Text Box: After 1 year of teaching, the candidate will take the last state exam, which is the PPR.
Text Box: If the candidate was never working as a substitute teacher, the candidate continues to study on his or her own for the next retake exam.  This candidate cannot begin phase 2 until he or she has passed the Content TExES exam and has been hired as a teacher.
